Another thing on our "do this summer" list was having a summer long family nerf war. The boys idea of course. Allen loved the idea and bought all the guns and bullets at Target one day. Claire got an automatic one. We let the kids know we bought the guns by calling them down stairs and ambushing them on arrival. A nerf war ensued. Since then we have had many variations and had to make a few rules. One night the power was out and Allen came up with capture the flag type games that we all enjoyed. It's been fun and I have tried hard not to get irritated when I find random bullets around the house.We have just about finished our summer list...just have "make a dry ice bomb" left. Not sure if that one is going to happen.

those guns are really fun, but i hear you about the stray nerf bullets (ug).
maybe you could hack your central vac system -- just toss the strays into the nearest port and they get whisked to a central magazine loader.
