Once upon a time Allen and I were poor students and needed a sleeper sofa to accommodate our visitors. We found a descent used one and were happy to have a somewhat real bed for our visitors. Soon we found that this bed was also very helpful when the young ones got sick in the middle of the night. One of us could sleep in the sleeper sofa with the baby instead of having the sick child in our small bed and keeping us both awake all night. And during the day it was a good place to have a sick child-in front of the TV and away from siblings hands. And so it went. When we finally were no longer students and moved to a real house, the sleeper sofa took a not so prominent spot in the bonus room, but was still there for visitors(not many anymore) and sick children. At some point it got dubbed the name "the sick bed". Now that Carter and Jared don't need their parents to sleep with them when they are sick, they still like to use the sick bed on occasion. It is always used during the day for the same good reasons-in front of the TV and everyone knows the rule: no one on the sick bed besides the sick one in hopes of not spreading germs-it gives a nice safety zone. I can't think of a time Claire has used it, the girl just doesn't get sick.
Well this week we had a first in the Langford house. Two sick children with two separate illnesses....and only one sick bed. Carter and Jared both plead their case as to why they needed the sick bed. I quickly realized, wait, they are 10 and 8, not 4 and 2. And so they shared the sick bed and swore not to touch each other. I had to take a picture because I thought they looked so cute all sick and laying there together. And I knew that this was my chance to document about our sick bed. It has been good to us. It is quite old and worn down. Will we ever get rid of it?
